John's conversation with his brother, though civil, had darkened his mood considerably, and sent him out onto the terrace for a breath of fresh air and a chance to escape the press of humanity in the elegantly appointed ballroom. The manor itself was no less impressive. It had stood empty for a goodly number of years before the newest owner, a Lady Victoria Wyndham, purchased it. Naturally, the women of the surrounding area were disappointed that it wasn't an unattached bachelor of independent means at whom they could throw their daughters. He, however, had not been disappointed. He had spied his hostess in the throng of attendees and had found her quite appealing.
